It’s that time again. Baseball season has officially started. And for the Blue Hose, this includes conference play. With an overall record of 13-8 and a conference record of 3-0, this season is starting out very promising.
So far this year, the Blue Hose have had sweeps of both High Point and NC Central, and a series win over the University of Connecticut last weekend. While the losses have included Florida State University, a school typically known for a great baseball program. Savannah State did manage to win three out of four games against our Blue Hose, but we made them hurt on the game we did win with a score of 17-3.
When asked how he feels about the start of the season, Coach Pollock said, “Overall, I am extremely proud of the way we have progressed as a defensive unit, and as a pitching staff. We are working hard daily to reach our offensive potential and become a championship team.”
We do have some very promising players out in the field and at the plate this season. Aaron Preston leads the team in batting average with .355 in 76 at bats. Nathan Chong and Brad Zebedis share the most homeruns with three in 77 at bats each. Billy Motroni has the most stolen bases with five in six attempts.
The team batting average is at .254. The Blue Hose also have an outstanding fielding percentage of .969. The pitching is just as promising with a team earned runs average (ERA) of 3.22 in 184.2 innings and team strikeouts adding up to 130.
Of the starting pitchers, Beau Dees carries the best ERA with 1.57 in 34.1 innings pitched. Pitchers Tim Corbin and Michael Trebendis also have tremendous ERAs with 0.00 in 10.1 innings and seven appearances and 0.96 in 9.1 innings and six appearances respectively.
Chandler Knox leads the starting pitchers in least base on balls with three in 31 innings. While Bud Jeter leads in strikeouts with 40 in 36.2 innings pitched.
On Wednesday, March 20, the Blue Hose will be facing Wofford here at the PC Baseball Complex at 3:00. This weekend the Hose will return to conference play in their three game series against Winthrop in Rock Hill. Come out and watch some baseball on what should be a beautiful day.
