A general encyclopedia of the Soviet Union and other socialist countries covering achievements of worldwide historical significance in economics, culture, and science. The third edition was translated and published into English in 31 volumes between 1974 and 1983. Each volume was translated separately, requiring use of the index found at the front of each volume to locate specific items [use of the index with this encyclopedia is crucial, as its ordering follows the Cyrillic, rather than the Latin, alphabet]; knowledge of Russian can be helpful to find the right volume the first time. Not all entries were translated into English; these are indicated in the index. Overall, some entries indicate an anti-American bias, which is understandable given the international tensions and ideological conflict between the USA and the USSR at the time." description from Wikipedia

THOMCAT

Use the online catalog to locate books in Thomason Library. You can search by author, title,  keyword, or subject.

  • Search for a person, as AUTHOR or SUBJECT, with last name, first name:

Stalin, Joseph 1879 1953 [as AUTHOR]

Stalin, Joseph 1879 1953 [as SUBJECT]
  • SUBJECT searching requires use of Library of Congress subject headings. The terms below are examples of subject headings in THOMCAT related to the Communist Russia:

Arms race--History--20th century              7 PC

  Cold War
  Communism

Communism--Soviet Union

Communism--Soviet Union--History

  Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962
  Gorbachev
Nuclear Nonproliferation see also Nuclear Disarmament
  Perestroika
  Population transfers
  Soviet Union
Soviet Union, Komitet Gosudarstvennoi Bezopasnosti [KGB]

Soviet Union--Politics and government - 1936-1953

  Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962
  Perestroika
  Soviet Union, Komitet Gosudarstvennoi Bezopasnosti
  Working Class--Soviet Union

Subject searching is an effective and precise method of searching the catalog, however, KEYWORD searching has benefits, also.

  • Try a KEYWORD search using two or three of the most significant words from the title or subject if you are unsure of the exact title or the correct subject heading to use. Place phrases in "quotation marks."

  • Connect words with AND, OR, NOT to focus your search.
  • Try truncation at the end of a word stem to retrieve singular, plural, and other variations of the word.  Use an asterisk (*) to truncate from 1 to 5 characters. Use a double asterisk (**) to include word endings with an unlimited number of characters.
KEYWORD Searching Tips

· Use AND between words to narrow your search:
perestroika
AND economy

· Use OR between words to expand your search and
group words with parentheses:
(russia* OR soviet*) AND propaganda

· Add * to the root of a word to truncate or
expand a term:
communis* = communist, communists, communism

Try KEYWORD searching with THOMCAT, PASCALcat, & the library's article databases
